Mata Tirtha Aunshi also known as Mother's day in Nepal falls on new moon night in the month of Baisakh (April/May). Nepalese people both from homeland and abroad observe the great festival of worshiping own mother on the auspicious occasion of Mata Tirtha Aunsi or the Mother's Day by offering special gifts, delicious foods and showing respect to the mother. Every year during this day, a big religious fair (mela) takes place at Matatirtha and the people who have no mother go their and do shraddha for their departed mothers. Apart from own mother's, mother in law, aunties are also have a great importance on this day for worshiping.

Where is Matatirtha?

Mata Tirtha is a relious shrine for Hindus, located 9 kilometers nothwest of the Kathmandu valley in Chandragiri Municipality. Mata Tirtha is a sacred word comprising "Mata" means mother and "Tirtha" means a sacred place so Mata Tirtha is a Hindu sacred place dedicated to mother.

This sacred place is popular for various religious activities and on the Baisakh new moon day, devotees are crowded for holy dip and paying homeage to their deities. People from Kathmandu and surrounding come to Matatirtha pond to take a holy bath and offering homeage to their departed mothers.

According to myth, a herder went to the Matatirtha pond to quench his thirst and upon drinking water, he saw the reflection of his departed mothers face in the pond. Since then, this place assumed the veneration.

People who have lost their mothers offer forth "Sida Daan", or a holy mixture of grains, to honor the woman who birthed them.
