Annapurna

Annapurna is a Sanskrit word that means full of food or complete or perfect food, but is normally translated as “Goddess of the Harvests”. It is the massif in the Himalayas in north-central Nepal that includes one peak over 8,000 meters, thirteen peaks over 7000 meters and sixteen more over 6,000 meters. Annapurna I (8,091 meters) is the 10th highest 8,000ers mountain peak in the world.

The massif is located 55 kilometer long bounded by the Kali Gandaki Gorge - The deepest gorge in the world on the west, the Marshayangdi River on the north and east and Pokhara valley on the south. The entire massif is protected within the 7,629 square kilometers Annapurna Conservation Area, the largest conservation area in Nepal. This conservation area includes the world's best trekking trails Annapurna Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Mount Annapurna is the first peak climbed on june 3, 1950 by the French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis lachenal.
