Top 6 Best Destinations of East Nepal

Nepal is not just about exploring the historical city of Kathmandu, stunningly beautiful Pokhara or enthralling Annapurna Base Camp. The more you try to explore this tiny beautiful country, the more you’ll realize it’s magnificence. Out of all the tourist spots of Nepal, the eastern part has always been briefly isolated. Yet, it carries tremendous potentials to develop as a major tourism destination. Here’s a collection of few eye-catching destinations of eastern Nepal that you must visit at least once.

6)    Namje (Dhankuta)
Ranked in by CNN as “Top 12 Best Places To Travel” (2011), Namje is a beautiful tourist destination that has caught the eyes of several international tourists recently. Situated at an altitude of 1600m, the village is known for excellent homestay facilities, scenic view of Mount Makalu (5th highest peak in the world) and serene environment.  The nearest air destination to Namje is Biratnagar which itself is 2 hours drive from the spot. There are multiple flights routing Kathmandu to Biratnagar which again demands 2 hours drive to Namje (Biratnagar-Itahari-Dharan-Vedetar-Namje).

5)    Charles Point (Vedetar) and Namaste Jharna (Falls)
Charles Point (a.k.a Vedetar) is one of the most popular destinations in the East. The hill station is merely 45 minutes North of Dharan which itself is a beautiful place to hang out. The place offers magnificent views of cities like Dharan, Itahari, Dhankuta, Hile and the Himalayan range.
On the other hand, Namaste Jharna is about 30 minutes short trek from Vedetar. The enticing spot is very quickly developing as one of the best travel spots.

4)    Hile (Dhankuta)
Situated at an altitude of about 2000m, Hile is famous for its chilling weather and Tongba (millet-based Nepalese/Tibetian alcoholic drink). The hill station is about an hour away from Dhankuta. Hile Bazaar is one of the highest places in the area, attracting numerous of local tourists annually. The only businesses that specifically target tourists are the restaurants and lodges. Hile is also famous for the iconic sculpture of Tongba which is claimed to be the biggest in the world.

3)    Ilam
Neighboring the famous hill town of Darjeeling, the city is probably the most renowned spot in Eastern Nepal. Ilam is adorned with beautiful lush green tree gardens and spectacular views of Himalayan range. The nearby places include Mai Pokhari (A popular pilgrimage situated at an altitude of 2438 meters),  Shree Antu Danda (vantage spot for sunrise and sunset—situated at an altitude of 1677 meters), Kannyam (beautiful tea garden and picnic spot) and Phikkal Bazaar. Ilam is merely 2 hours away from Bhadrapur, the city that is connected to Kathmandu by air route.

2)    Pathivara
Situated at a staggering altitude of 3794 meters from the sea level, Pathivara can easily become a “personal favorite” for someone who has been there. At the top lies Pathivara Temple which is a popular pilgrimage destination of both Hindus and Buddhists. Suketar (Taplejung) is the nearest airport that links to the capital Kathmandu. A 45-minute ride from Suketar will take you to Tallo Phedi. From there, a short 45-minute trek will lead you to Mathlo Phedi. Both the places offers lodge/homestay service. A 1:30 hr trek from Mathlo Phedi will eventually take you to the top of Pathivara Hill.

1)    Namche Bazaar
Namche is located at the foothills of world’s tallest peak—Mount Everest. Situated at an altitude of 3440m, Namche is a staging point for the climbers of Everest or other gigantic peaks. A historic trading hub, Namje is renowned for its homemade yak cheese and butter. The hill station is situated on the slope of an arch-shaped mountain, which allows you to oversee the sights of spectacular mountain peaks, day and night. One can get a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla Airport. Namche bazaar to Lukla trek takes 7 to 8 hours to complete along the Dudhkoshi River.
